Supporting People with Learning Disabilities and Autism
At Personalised Care Services, we believe people with learning disabilities and/or autism have the same right to opportunities as everyone else. They deserve to live satisfying and valued lives, treated with dignity and respect. Everyone should have a home in their community, develop and maintain relationships, and get the support they need to live a healthy, safe, and rewarding life.
Our Approach
Our experienced and dedicated staff advocate for and support people with learning disabilities and/or autism to lead happier lives. We know from experience that this is achievable. We adopt a holistic approach, working with individuals, their families, staff, clinicians, other service providers, and commissioners.
Goals and Support
We support people to:
- Maximize Independence: Promote independence and wellbeing in a person-centered manner.
- Social Care Values: Understand and apply social care values at all times.
- Access Services: Enable and encourage access to universal services and community facilities.
- Manage Risks: Help manage acceptable levels of risk in day-to-day lives.
- Personal Affairs: Support in managing personal affairs and finances.
- Equipment: Identify and fit simple equipment to maximize independence.
- Communication and Social Skills: Develop communication, social interaction, and imagination.
- Self-Esteem: Improve self-esteem and pride in accomplishments.
- Emotional Recognition: Enhance recognition of emotions for oneself and others.
- Leisure Activities: Participate in group leisure activities where everyone can succeed.
- Volume Levels: Increase awareness of appropriate volume levels.
- Group Skills: Develop skills for functioning as part of a group and following directions.
- Understanding Emotions: Understand emotions through body language.
- Expressing Individuality: Provide space to express individuality while reinforcing realistic personal targets.
- Community Involvement: Work with the local community and learn appropriate social rules to stay safe.
Creating a Safe Environment
We aim to create a safe environment that supports and enables each person to gain the skills and confidence to become part of their community. We strive to offer valued social roles and develop opportunities for active community participation. This includes:
- New Skills and Experiences: Helping people develop new skills and enjoy new experiences to build confidence and self-esteem.
- Leisure and Recreation: Providing opportunities for leisure and recreational activities in mainstream community venues.
- Daytime Activities: Utilizing mainstream facilities, supported employment, volunteer work, adult learning, and other meaningful daytime occupations within the wider community.
Delivering Person-Centered Support
- Individual Goals: Focus on individual goals and aspirations, positive qualities, and important relationships.
- Control and Inclusion: Engage people to have more control over their lives and experience greater inclusion.
- Strength-Based Focus: Focus on people’s strengths, encouraging positive risks to foster growth while safeguarding them from harm.
- Specialist Support: Partner with other professionals to provide specialist support and ensure high-quality training for our staff, equipping them with the skills needed to help people with multiple needs.
